What is an ATS score?
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software almost every mid-size and large employer uses to receive, parse, and rank applications. Before a recruiter sees your resume, the ATS extracts its text, tries to identify your contact details, work history and skills, and scores how well the record matches what the employer is looking for. Your ATS score is a measure of how successfully that process works on your resume.
A low score usually isn't about your experience — it's about formatting and signal. Multi-column layouts, contact details trapped in a header, creative section titles, and achievements without numbers all cost you ranking before a human is involved.
How SkillFitly scores your resume
We grade five weighted categories, modeled on how production ATS platforms actually work:
- Parsability — can the system extract your email, phone, links and employment dates? Are there table or graphic artifacts that scramble text extraction?
- Structure & sections — does it find standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills) plus a summary and supporting sections?
- Content quality — bulleted achievements, quantified impact, strong action verbs, no passive filler, professional voice.
- Keywords & skills — how many recognizable tools and technologies appear, whether you have a skills section, and whether those skills are proven inside your experience.
- Formatting hygiene — length, line density, and capitalization.
What's a good ATS score?
- 85–100 (Excellent) — parses cleanly and ranks well nearly everywhere.
- 70–84 (Good) — solid, but specific fixes will lift it into the top tier.
- 50–69 (Needs work) — it parses, but weak signals are costing you rankings.
- Below 50 (At risk) — high chance of being filtered before a human reads it.
How to improve your ATS score fast
- Use a single-column layout — no tables, text boxes, columns, or icons.
- Put contact details in the body, never in a header or footer.
- Use standard section headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education.
- Quantify at least a third of your bullets — %, $, time saved, scale.
- Name concrete tools ("Kubernetes", "PostgreSQL"), not vague phrases.
- Start bullets with strong verbs; delete "Responsible for".
- Save as a text-based PDF or .docx — never a scanned image.
The fastest route is to rebuild in a template that's ATS-safe by construction — our free ATS resume builder handles the structure and formatting for you, and can import your existing PDF so you keep your content.
ATS score vs. job match score
They answer different questions. The ATS score on this page grades your resume on its own — can it be parsed and ranked well anywhere. The resume ↔ job match checkercompares your resume against one specific job description to show which required skills you're missing. Strong candidates use both: fix the ATS fundamentals once, then tailor per application.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ATS score for a resume?
Aim for 85 or above. A score of 85–100 means your resume parses cleanly and carries strong ranking signals. 70–84 is solid but leaving points on the table. Below 50 means you're at real risk of being filtered out before a human reads your resume.
How is the ATS score calculated?
SkillFitly grades your resume across five weighted categories: parsability (can the ATS extract your contact details and dates), structure (standard section headings), content quality (quantified achievements, action verbs), keywords (recognizable skills and tools), and formatting hygiene (length, layout, capitalization). Each check awards points, and the total is normalized to a 0–100 score.
Do I need a job description to check my ATS score?
No. This checker scores your resume on its own — how well any applicant tracking system can parse and rank it. If you also want to see how well it matches one specific job, use the free resume checker, which compares your resume against a pasted job description.
Is the ATS score checker really free?
Yes. You get one free check with no signup at all. Create a free account and you get three checks every day, plus the ATS-friendly resume editor to fix what the score flags.
Why did my resume get a low ATS score?
The most common causes are missing contact details or dates the parser can read, non-standard section headings, no quantified achievements, too few recognizable skill keywords, and multi-column or table-based layouts that scramble text extraction. Your results list every failed check with the exact fix.
Is my resume stored when I check it?
No. Your resume is processed in memory to produce the score and discarded when the response is returned. Nothing is saved unless you separately choose to save a resume to your account.
